Florence Historical Archive 

A research center and repository of
documents and materials relating to the history of Florence and its
major role as a railroad hub and important mining and agricultural
center for the Pike’s Peak Region and the Arkansas Valley.

OUR MISSION
The Archive’s mission is to foster an interest in the history of Florence, Fremont and
Northeastern Custer Counties. We provide local access in a welcoming research
environment and are open all year with a regular schedule and knowledgeable staff.
The archive is available to researchers, students, teachers, historians, genealogists,
residents, and tourists.

We provide easy access to information through accession lists and a searchable data
base that will eventually be compatible across the historical organizations of the county
and available for generations to come. The archive accepts collections from other
entities on a temporary or permanent basis and will provide other entities with
assistance in establishing an accession list of their historical data.

We work with all local history organizations and municipalities. We sponsor or co-
sponsor, cooperate with and support history related events of educational and historical
organizations in the regions. Genealogical research expertise is provided by trained
volunteers, and we maintain a library of books on local history.

Florence Historical Archive sells publications dealing with local history and hosts
events throughout the year.

Events:
Presentations by our members on The Railroad History of Fremont County. Programs
on Railroad History were offered at the Senior College at the Fremont Campus of
Pueblo Community College and at the Bell Tower in Florence.
Senior College class on the McCandless family, one of the founding families of Florence
was also made available to various civic groups.
Programs on Women’s Suffrage are planned for the Bell Tower Cultural Center in
Florence to celebrate the Centennial Initiative and the many contributions by the women
of Colorado to ensure that women had representation. Presentations are tentatively
scheduled for the second Sunday of each month beginning in July.

Exhibit materials on the three topics above have been on display at the Fremont
Campus of the Pueblo Community College and at the Fremont County Building and at
other local events.

The archive participated in local events such as Pioneer Day, Big Band Bash, Barn
Dance and Historic Home Tours.

We host book signings for new books published by local authors related to Florence and
the region.
